Principal's Message

Welcome to the Washington-Henry Family! At WHES, we are learning, caring, and sharing together.

I am privileged to serve as principal of Washington-Henry Elementary alongside a staff who have a heart for all children.

I believe:

  • Building relationships with each other is key.
  • Kindness is required.
  • Children learn best from what they see us do and how we make them feel.
  • Mistakes result in success when embraced as learning opportunities.
  • That fair does not mean equal.

My charge is always “children first”. As a school community, all decision-making and implementation of programs and practices center with this at the core. Every day we work to shape our children into life ready adults through the lens of innovation, relevance and equity. This is successful when the lines from home, school and local community intersect. We are all in this journey together. Children thrive when surrounded by support inside and outside the school walls.

As one of the oldest schools in our district, we are steeped in history and tradition which you can feel as you walk through the building. The stories from community members highlight the educational impact our school has made over the decades in Hanover County.

I encourage you to be in the school as often as possible. Be a part of the great learning experiences taking place every day at Washington-Henry. You will have a first-hand view of how we are committed to propel children into successfully accomplishing their goals and aspirations. Every child is unique and their education journey reflects this.

It is an honor to be part of this community, and I am committed to continuing the road of excellence that has been a part of the school. Feel free to reach out to me by contacting the office at (804) 723-2300 or via email.

Partnering together,
Lisa Thompson
